I have come to the realization that photography is nothing but an endless money pit. I know that sounds harsh, but let’s call a spade a spade. Every time you think you’re fulfilled with all of the equipment you currently own, BAM!, something new catches your eye and “you must have it.”
How many times have you said “this will be the last lens I buy!”? How many times has it been true? Game. Set. Match.
Once you start getting into any hobby (but I feel that photography especially), all hope is lost for any logic or reasoning when it comes to buying new toys to support that hobby. In the case of photography, it can be anything from lens to tripods to lights, etc. There’s always something newer, something better lurking somewhere out there. Personally, I have been reduced to checking the photo/video section of craigslist about 10 times a day to make sure I haven’t missed any great deals on equipment. Stuff that will probably collect dust after a few uses.
But it’s not all terrible. As I’ve said before, it’s a constructive hobby and it gets me out of the house, gives me a new perspective on things (as cheesy as that sounds), and gives me time to think. It’s also a hell of a lot better than endlessly browsing the Internet.
When one thinks of a hobby, it’s all peaches and sunshine. However, as I’ve been ranting about here, there are huge capital expenditures that you must be willing to embrace in order to truly adorn the badge of a hobbyist of some sort.
So… what’s the moral of the story? If you love what you do, and can afford it, do it! Don’t abandon this endless money pit that we so affectionately call photography.
